SIGNATURE EVENTS

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosts a variety of lectures and community events, offering enriching experiences for our students, faculty and others in the community.

COLLOQUIUM SERIES

Each semester, the Department invites a handful of speakers from various fields in mathematics and statistics to share their research with the ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥ community. The talks are aimed at a general math audience and are frequently accessible to undergraduates. All are welcome to attend.

HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS SEMINAR

The Philadelphia Area Seminar on the History of Mathematics (PASHoM) is a seminar of faculty from colleges and universities in the Philadelphia area, with a shared interest in the history of mathematics. .

PI MU EPSILON ADDRESS

Pi Mu Epsilon is national honor society whose purpose is the promotion and recognition of scholarly activity in the mathematical sciences among students. New members are initiated each spring on the University's reading day during finals week. Following the initiation ceremony, a Mathematician or Statistician gives a research talk to the audience. This address is usually the most undergraduate-focused talks of the year and is open to anyone at ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥.

DATAFEST PHILLY

DataFest Philadelphia is part of the national American Statistical Association DataFestβ€”a 48-hour case competition where teams of undergraduate students receive a rich, complex dataset from a large company and analyze it for insights.  This competition helps students learn about and refine their skills in data science, one of the most in-demand skills in the workforce.

ANNUAL FACUTLY-STUDENT SOFTBALL GAME

Faculty and students meet on the diamond each spring for a friendly game of softball. The student team usually finishes next-to-last in the contest, while the faculty team finishes a strong second.
