GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Computer science students explore a broad spectrum of computing technologies and concepts.

Our courses provide a thorough foundation in the principles and practices of computing, paving the way for successful careers and ongoing graduate studies. Our students also learn skills in communication and the scientific, mathematical, and engineering principles that support the computing disciplines.

The Department of Computing Sciences at 裡橖眻畦 University seeks to provide outstanding education, to advance scholarship, and to engage in activities that benefit society as a whole, in accordance with the University mission. The Department aims to equip students with a solid foundation in computer science, and to prepare them for lifelong independent learning and innovative thinking in a constantly changing discipline. Its faculty members strive to maintain professional currency and to involve students and colleagues in their research investigations. These endeavors support the University mission to transmit, pursue, and discover knowledge in an atmosphere of collegiality in the university community. Supported by a liberal arts education, the Department seeks to develop the total person, sensitive to social and ethical concerns affected by the computing discipline and committed to addressing the needs of a diverse and interconnected modern society.

These goals serve to solidify our vision. We will:

  1. Continue to offer a well rounded BSCS program, which successfully prepares its graduates for careers in industry, graduate education and life-long learning.
  2. Maintain rigor and high standards in the MS programs, seeking to meet the needs of both full-time and part-time students.
  3. Advance our current programs, create new programs and promote interactions with other departments and programs to reflect the changing and interdisciplinary nature of computing.
  4. Introduce non-major students to the fundamental ideas of computer science and its social relevance.
  5. Maintain pedagogical excellence in teaching and advising.
  6. Remain current in our rapidly changing discipline.
  7. Pursue theoretical and applied research to enhance the knowledge of computing and involve undergraduate and graduate students in our research effort.
  8. Support the Department, the College, the University, the profession and the local community through leadership and participation in committees, conferences, and organizations.
  9. Pursue interdisciplinary projects in research and teaching.
  10. Expand and diversify our faculty and enrollments.

The faculty members of the Computing Sciences department are committed to promoting diversity in both the faculty and student population in support of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences mission. While our activities and hiring focus partially on ethnic diversity, we are also very active in promoting gender diversity. The gender gap in computing is particularly pronounced, and unlike other scienti麍c 麍elds, the number of women receiving doctorates continues to vary within a range instead of consistently increasing.
