CAREERS AND ALUMNI
Why Study Computing Sciences?
Computing is part of everything we do. A Computer Science degree enables you to make a positive influence on the world and provides opportunities for creativity and innovation. Our graduates are not only well-paid, but they also experience high job satisfaction. A computer science degree opens the door to a myriad of career opportunities.
PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS
Every first semester Computer Science major enrolls in an Enrichment Seminar. This one credit course introduces students to University life as a CS major, helping them navigate course selection, time management and long-term planning. Seminar guest lecturers include Career Center experts in job/internship hunting and alumni who share their success stories.
In addition to student organizations dedicated to programming and sports analytics, we support both an ACM and an ACM-W student chapter. These chapters provide unique opportunities for networking, mentoring and bonding over common interests. Activities usually concentrate on professional development such as resume writing workshops and interview practice.
Department administration and advisors, along with the University Career Center, actively encourage and help students find summer jobs related to computing, resulting in a placement rate of close to 80 percent for students in the summer before their senior year. Our students have worked at organizations including Siemens, Vanguard, Ralph Lauren and the U.S. State Department. Some students even receive academic credit for their paid positions as they can use.
All Computer Science students take a Senior Projects course in the fall of their final year. This capstone course focuses on a semester long software development or research project and provides valuable experience in planning, specification, design, communication, teamwork and presentation. Senior Project day is always a highlight of the fall semester.
