Engineering Students Present at 2019 Research Symposium
More than 25 College of Engineering undergraduates and graduate students, representing every department, participated in ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥’s annual Student Research Symposium, sponsored by the University’s Center for Research and Fellowships.
Fall Semester for Engineering Freshmen Culminates in Interdisciplinary Project Presentations
Teams presented projects that exposed them to the range of engineering disciplines, from the use of biomimicry to address water shortages to developing a colorimeter to measure the kinetics of an enzymatic reaction.
How a new domestic end market for HDPE emerged | Plastics Recycling Update, 12/11/19
Through research he conducted as a ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥ Engineering doctoral student, Michael Pluimer, ’17 PhD, has been instrumental in establishing a market for recovered plastic in road drainage pipes. Previously, virgin plastic was required for use under roads and rail lines. The change offers a much more sustainable way to produce and manufacture pipes.
Mechanical Engineering Senior Design Teams Awarded ASME Grants
Four teams of senior Mechanical Engineering were awarded $600 grants from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Philadelphia section, for their capstone design projects.
Civil Engineering Seniors Earn Moles Scholarships
Gerard Catalfamo and Madeline McQuillan were awarded $6,250 scholarships from the Moles in recognition of their academic achievements. The Moles is a national fraternal organization dedicated to the heavy construction industry in the greater New York City area.
ME Makerspace: Spawning Creativity, Innovation and Racecars
ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥’s Formula SAE team, NovaRacing, has become an engaged member of Mechanical Engineering’s Makerspace community. Students are finding it to be an ideal setting in which to accomplish much of the early stages of the process, from 3D printing to laser cutting.

Career and Internship Meetups Connect Students with Employers
Career and internship meetups recently were held for the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The meetups function as mini career fairs—providing access to recruiters and alumni explicitly looking for ECE and ME majors from ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥ for summer internships or full-time employment.

ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥ Engineers Recognized as National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows
Six ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥ University students and alumni, including four from the College of Engineering, have been recognized as National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.
Bridget Moore ’20 CE Named Inaugural Recipient of McMahon Associates, Inc. Student Scholarship
McMahon Associates, Inc., a transportation engineering and planning firm, selected Bridget Moore, a Civil and Environmental Engineering junior, as the inaugural recipient of the Joseph and Peggy McMahon Transportation Engineering Scholarship. She was recognized for her deep interest in the transportation engineering field, her participation in professional societies and her commitment to giving back to the community.

Engineering Seniors Recognized for Academic Excellence and Meritorious Service
This year, the Academic Excellence Award was presented to 27 students, the top 10 percent by cumulative grade point average in each engineering major. Fifteen seniors who distinguished themselves through long-term extra-curricular and/or service activities within the College were presented with the Meritorious Service Award.
ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥’s NSBE Chapter Sees Success at 45th Annual National Convention
In March, 12 members of ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥’s Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers attended NSBE’s annual convention in Detroit. The event featured career and college fairs and workshops, and students came away with internships, job offers, and new and empowering experiences.
ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥’s IEEE Chapter Hosts Sumobot Competition
The ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥ chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) recently held its annual sumobot competition. Students assemble their Zumo 32U4 robots and customize them to affect weight, size, speed, strength, etc. In competition, the goal is to push your competing sumobot out of a ring that serves as the field of play.
Civil Engineering Department Partners with Construction Industry Organization
ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥'s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is entering into a new relationship with The Moles, a national fraternal organization dedicated to the heavy construction industry in the greater New York City area. Through a variety of programs, the students at 20 participating colleges and universities enjoy tremendous networking and learning opportunities.
Industry Research Provides Structural Engineering Students with Real-World Experience
Since 2005, the recently named Richard K. Faris ’69 CE, ’70 MSCE Structural Engineering Teaching and Research Laboratory has been providing ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥’s Civil Engineering students with opportunities for real-world research in a space equipped with full-scale and component size infrastructure elements. Currently, students are working with the residential structural engineering firm Mulhern & Kulp on shear wall testing.
FHWA Works: Careers in Motion - Employee Spotlight - David Mensching, PhD, PE
As an undergraduate and graduate student, ΈΜιΩΦ±²¥ Civil Engineering alumnus David Mensching, PhD, ’10 CE, ’12 MSCE was an active researcher. Today he is the Asphalt Materials Research Program Manager for the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Infrastructure Research and Development.
AIAA Quadcopter Project Contributes to Student Learning

The ME Makerspace: Facility for Innovation and Student Advancement
In 2018, the College of Engineering established a new Mechanical Engineering makerspace with funds donated by alumna Coleen Burke-Finney '90 ME and her husband Michael Finney. Equipped with 3-D printers, drill presses and soldering stations, the space provides students with a place to explore their creativity and innovation.

Sustainable Engineering PhD candidate Mary McRae has analyzed climate change data in a way that will help the Department of Defense make smarter decisions on everything from mission planning to aircraft acquisitions and performance requirements by assessing which assets are most vulnerable to the effects of global warming.
Mechanical Engineering Graduate Students Publish, Present and Win Conference Awards
This fall, doctoral and master’s degree students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering garnered conference awards for best papers and posters, as well as advances in their fields of study. They also co-authored 17 journal publications.
