Dr. Gerard Jones Published as Author of New Book, Gravity-Driven Water Flow in Networks
Dr. Gerard F. Jones, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, is the author of the newly published textbook, Gravity-Driven Water Flow in Networks. Dr. Jones wrote this resource to give engineers, designers, and technology specialists working in or for developing countries and rural areas insight into the analysis and design of gravity-fed water networks.
Dr. Jones draws on his experience as a project engineer at a large oil refinery during and immediately after his baccalaureate engineering degree and from leading annual service-learning trips to Latin American countries, where engineering students work with local villagers to develop and install reliable gravity-flow water systems. This book provides solutions to problems associated with creating a sound gravity-driven water pipe network and explains how to maintain its functionality under a variety of environmental and geological pressures. Engineering students can use this textbook to tackle all of the major issues currently driving innovation around delivering an adequate water supply to the areas where its needed most, says Dr. Jones, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Gravity-Driven Water Flow in Networks bridges the gap between classical fluid mechanics that many students learn as undergraduate engineering students and the applied, technology-based material found in other literature on these systems. It also presents original design graphs and formulas, as well as computational algorithms, for the fundamental problem of analysis and design for single- and multiple-pipe gravity-driven water systems. Some of the valuable information found in this book includes:
- An extensive case study to illuminate how gravity-driven water flow systems are analyzed, engineered, designed, built, used, and maintained
- More than 100 illustrations and tables
- Comprehensive coverage of pipe materials, pressure ratings, and dimensions
- More than 100 solved homework and example problems
