FACULTY AWARDS
Each year several awards are given to faculty members who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to the University.
The Outstanding Faculty Research Award
The Outstanding Faculty Research Award is presented to a member of the faculty who demonstrates the highest standards of excellence in their research, scholarship, and contributions to their field. The scholar receives an honorarium and a certificate attesting to this award at a formal dinner in the spring and is presented to the university at spring commencement. Under a newly instituted policy, a nomination may remain active for a total of three years. Updated vita and references may be provided by the nominee each year of consideration.
Recipients of the award will be individuals who have established a national and international scholarly reputation in their field as evidenced by their publications in highly cited journals, invited presentations at national and international symposia, leadership in research consortia and centers, invited academic colloquium presentations, and similar scholarly activities that indicate stature in their field.
- All full-time faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Nursing, 裡橖眻畦 School of Business and the School of Law who hold the rank of Tenured Full Professor are eligible for the award.
- Faculty with at least ten years of service to 裡橖眻畦 at the time of nomination are eligible.
- The award is presented based on the scholarly activity of the faculty member while on the faculty of 裡橖眻畦 University. Scholarly work completed when the nominee was not on the 裡橖眻畦 faculty is not formally considered.
- No individual may receive the award more than once.
Letter of Nomination
- A formal letter of nomination may be submitted by an individual or a group of full-time 裡橖眻畦 faculty members.
- The letter should be submitted as a Word document addressed to Dr. Amanda M. Grannas, Vice Provost for Research and Chief Research Officer, and submitted via email by 5 p.m. EST annually on the first Friday in November.
- The letter of nomination should include a narrative presenting a description of the nominees qualifications for consideration, the significance of his or her scholarship, and an explanation of its originality and impact in its field.
- All nominees will be contacted and asked to submit supporting materials such as a current Vita and sample publications.
Selection Committee
The recipient is selected by a committee consisting of the Vice Provost for Research, previous award recipients, and additional faculty representatives, including members of Faculty Congress.

The Lafferty Award
The Lafferty award recognizes faculty members who have made a distinctive and lasting contribution to enhancing the quality of the student experience by engaging with students in significant ways outside a traditional teaching or research relationship and beyond their formal advising duties. Student engagement activities include being an active faculty advisor for student clubs, attending performances and athletic events of students, encouraging students to participate in academic venues off campus (national meetings, poster sessions), or keeping in touch with students after graduation.
All active, full time faculty members, including CNT, tenure-track, and tenured faculty, are eligible. The award will include a medallion to be given at the May faculty and staff picnic, and will be publicly recognized at the University graduation ceremony. Faculty are eligible to win this award only once.
Nomination Protocol and Application Materials
Nominations are solicited from students. Self-nominations are not accepted. Nominations are made via an online submission form, and include the name, email address and major(s) of the student nominator, the name and department of the nominee, and a narrative (500 words or less) describing the merits of the nominee for this award. The narrative should outline the nominees activities beyond the expectations and parameters of his or her job and should demonstrate, through specific examples, the positive impact of these activities on the quality of the student experience.
The Awards Committee members are not eligible to nominate or to be nominated for any award overseen by the committee.
Procedure for Review and Selection
The committee will review the nominations and, depending on the details included in the nominations, may contact department chairs for additional supporting materials. The committee will submit a recommendation to the Faculty Congress for a Lafferty award recipient, along with a justification and a complete summary data on all the other nominees.

The University Mid-Career Service Award
The University Mid-Career Service Award recognizes faculty members who have made extraordinary contributions to the welfare and functioning of their departments, colleges, the University, and their profession. Such service must have exceeded the normal requirements of the candidates position, and must only have been minimally compensated.
All active, full-time faculty members, including CNT and tenured faculty, at the associate level are eligible. The award will include a medallion to be given at the May faculty and staff picnic and will be publicly recognized at the University graduation ceremony. Faculty are eligible to win this award only once.
Nomination Protocol and Application Materials
Nominations are made via an online submission form, and include the name, email address and department of the nominator, the name and department of the nominee, and a short narrative (300 words or less) describing the merits of the nominee for this award. Full-time tenured faculty, chairpersons, academic directors, and deans are eligible to nominate. Faculty members may also self-nominate.
The Awards Committee will notify the nominee by email, and the nomination will become effective once the nominee accepts the invitation. Invited nominees will be asked to submit materials in support of their nomination, which include the following: a statement certifying that the nominee meets the eligibility requirements; a list of service activities, with dates, leadership role, level of compensation, and the nature of service performed; and a short narrative (no longer than one page) describing the significance and impact of the service activities. There must be evidence of leadership and outstanding achievement. If materials are missing, an individual's nomination for this award may not be considered.
If a nominee is not given the award, they will have the option to allow their application to stay active for up to two additional years, so long as they continue to serve at the rank of associate professor.
The Awards Committee members are not eligible to nominate or to be nominated for any award overseen by the committee.
Procedure for Review and Selection
The Awards Committee of the Faculty Congress will be charged with reviewing nominations and submitting a recommendation to the Faculty Congress for a mid-career service award recipient, along with a justification and a complete summary data on all the other nominees.

The Lawrence C. Gallen, OSA, Faculty Service Award
The Lawrence C. Gallen, OSA Faculty Service Award is presented to an individual member of the 裡橖眻畦 University faculty who has, over many years, contributed outstanding service to the 裡橖眻畦 University community. Any compensation for this service should have been minimal. All active, tenured faculty members with ten years of service or longer are eligible, including those who currently hold administrative positions, provided that they have taught full-time at 裡橖眻畦 for at least ten years. Above all, the faculty members service should have consistently exceeded the normal requirements and ordinary expectations of their position.
The President will open the annual nominations for the award by sending a letter to faculty, chairpersons, academic directors, and deans, with a copy of these guidelines. The evaluation criteria and selection process will be generally publicized by electronic posting, with a link to the Provost, University Senate and Faculty Congress websites. These sites will contain a link to the Committee on Faculty, to enhance responses by email.
Deadlines for 2023-2024
Nominations for the Gallen Faculty Service Award will be accepted until Friday, December 1, 2023. Supporting materials may be submitted after that date, but no later than Friday, January 12, 2024. After the Awards Committee of the Faculty Congress has made a careful review of these materials, to be completed by the end of March, the Faculty Congress will recommend three faculty finalists to the Provost for submission to the President of the University.
Instructions for Nominators
Full-time tenured faculty, chairpersons, academic directors, and deans are eligible to nominate. Eligible faculty may self-nominate. Nominators should consult the eligibility guidelines below and then contact the prospective nominee to ensure that he or she agrees to be nominated. Then submit the name of the nominee via the online submission form.
Please direct any questions about this form or the nomination procedure via email to the Faculty Congress Awards Committee.
Nominations must be submitted online using this nomination form. If more than one nominator chooses to nominate the same person, they may each provide a separate statement, or together they may submit a joint supporting statement.
Instructions for Nominees
The Awards Committee will notify the nominee by email, and the nomination will become effective when the nominee responds, confirming his or her willingness to be considered. The nominee will then need to submit by email a list of service activity at 裡橖眻畦, with dates of service and a description of the nature of each type of service activity. This description may be in outline or narrative form, and should include the following information (overall length, up to five pages):
- Leadership role in the service activity: to what extent did the nominee initiate the activity and take a formal or informal leadership role in carrying it out (Faculty Congress will give significant weight to the nominees level of contribution and initiative rather than just participation).
- Impact of the service: indicate specific outcomes as they have affected the 裡橖眻畦 University community.
- Level of compensation: if compensated, to what degree (reduced load, small amount, 20%, paid position, etc.); if uncompensated, indicate if it was an appointed or elected position (e.g. departmental committee, Faculty Senator), vs. a more informal, voluntary activity. Work that is significantly supported with a salary or other monetary compensation does not qualify as service.
- Include service that was both visible and invisible,: visible service would occur within a formal position (e.g., chair of Faculty Congress), whereas invisible service could be extensive work on curriculum development, voluntary student counseling, etc.
Procedures for Review and Selection
The Awards Committee of the Faculty Congress will be charged with the process of reviewing nominations for the Gallen Award and returning the names of finalists to the Faculty Congress. The Awards Committee members are not eligible to nominate or to be nominated for any award overseen by the committee. The Awards Committee will meet, discuss the nominations (considering the criteria noted above as well as the nominees record of past nominations), and will then recommend three faculty finalists to the Faculty Congress who, after review and approval, will pass these names to the Provost. The recommendation will list the finalists alphabetically, but indicate the vote for each finalist. A brief statement explaining the results may be attached. Supporting materials will also be forwarded. The Provost will forward the recommendation and materials to the President, who will make the final selection. The chair of the Faculty Congress will send to Campus Currents and the 裡橖眻畦n a statement describing the award, process and criteria, and alphabetically listing the finalist and other nominees. The presentation of the award will take place at Commencement.

The Meyer Innovation and Creative Excellence (ICE) Award
The Meyer Innovation and Creative Excellence Awards were created and endowed in 2009 by Patrick Meyer '74 VSB in honor of the Meyer family (Patrick '74, Edward '86, and C. Paul '30) to recognize a spirit of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship that enhances 裡橖眻畦 University.
Award recipients will exhibit exceptional strengths in the following areas:
- Founding and executing upon an innovative or creative business, project, academic program, or initiative
- Identifying problems as opportunities to create solutions
- Embodying an entrepreneurial mindset
- Leadership in the greater 裡橖眻畦 community
Nominations open in the spring. The top student from each college will be interviewed on video about why they deserve the award. The 裡橖眻畦 community will vote and the top student will receive a $5,000 award for post-graduation utilization and a trophy.
One faculty or staff member will also be awarded a Meyer Innovation Award, $2,500 prize, and trophy for embodying an entrepreneurial mindset in their work at 裡橖眻畦.
The University Scholarly Achievement Award
The University Scholarly Achievement Award will recognize excellence on the part of faculty for published research, scholarship, and/or creative expression. The awards will be given for accomplishments in the preceding three academic years. Recognition could be for a single distinguished achievement, or for a series of closely related works.
The award will include a framed certificate, a $1,000 cash award and public recognition at an annual Outstanding Scholars Dinner and at the University graduation ceremony.
Eligibility for the Award
All full-time professors, including CNT, tenure-track, and tenured faculty, who have served at least three years at the University are eligible to be nominated. Works by research teams (two or more faculty) are also eligible for consideration. The team would be a single nomination and would share the award. Faculty can be eligible to win this award more than once. Faculty who have received the award cannot be nominated again until the third year following their award.
Nomination
An online nomination form will gather the following information: Nominators Name, Email, and Department/College, Nominees Name and Department/College, a brief description of the achievement to be recognized, and a narrative describing why the nominator feels the nominee is an outstanding candidate for the award. The reviews are based solely on information and supporting materials included in the nomination form, so the nominator should include enough information for the selection committee to make their decision. Self-nominations are not accepted.
